Food contact materials are all materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. These can consist of a variety of materials, such as plastics, rubbers, paper and metal. These materials are also used in catering equipment or catering facilities up to transport containers. Requirements for food contact materials are laid down in European legislation or technical guidelines. Furthermore, product (group)-specific standards contain additional requirements and specifications regarding the materials or alloys used for catering equipment, pipes, fittings, drinking water installations, beverage dispensing and cutlery.
